Our Story
This Family and its lands go back all the way to the 19th century. Family records date back to João Baptista Marques Pinheiro , born on the 16th of December, 1805. He belonged to a family from Sesulfe, known as Latagões (meaning huge) due to their unusual height, who some claim was a noble family. He became a Cavalry officer with strong ideas and unquestionable morals, and was a huge supporter of the king D. Miguel I during the Liberal Wars in Portugal between 1828 and 1834.
His brother, José Baptista Marques Pinheiro, still tried to make him change sides to support D. Pedro IV but he didn’t accept. After D. Miguel lost the war, João Baptista Marques Pinheiro came to Mirandela and took refuge in Quinta do Carrasquinho where he dedicated the rest of his life to beekeeping and olive growing.
Nowadays, father and son, a Doctor and a Marine Biologist, also put their hearts to the production of olive oil, an endeavour deep within the family roots for the past 6 generations.
The family has implemented new and more sustainable agricultural techniques, with a great respect for the environmental protection and biodiversity. Further pursuing this goal, Mont’Alverne has obtained the organic farming official certification.
